The Suffolk County Police Department's Street Takeover Task Force has been busy. They say since Nov. 8, they've broken up seven street takeovers, issued 253 summonses and impounded four vehicles.
It's all from a growing trend, driven in large part by social media, where drivers shut down streets and perform dangerous maneuvers, often surrounded by spectators.
Recent incidents have been reported in Ronkonkoma, Islip, Patchogue and Miller Place.
Police say they will continue to monitor social media, and have extra patrols at the ready to curb these takeovers.
They also say there will be extra patrols on the road to curb aggressive & distracted driving, as well as increased DWI enforcement, as the holidays approach.
