Officials: Smithtown park ranger injured while apprehending DWI suspect

The Smithtown Town Supervisor’s Office says the ranger pulled over Gregory Babigan after witnessing him hit another car on Landing Avenue.

A St. James man is facing charges for driving while intoxicated and injuring a park ranger Saturday in Smithtown, according to officials.
The Smithtown Town Supervisor’s Office says the ranger pulled over Gregory Babigan after witnessing him hit another car around 8 p.m. on Landing Avenue.
Babigan allegedly reversed during the stop and rammed into the ranger’s vehicle three times before the car became disabled.
The suspect was then apprehended and charged with DWI, resisting arrest, assault, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident.
Officials say the ranger was hospitalized and is expected to be OK.
