A Mastic Beach woman is “brain dead” following a domestic violence attack by her boyfriend earlier this month, her daughter told News 12. Suffolk police did not initially alert the community about the assault or arrest. They confirmed that a domestic incident in Mastic Beach on Feb. 12 perpetrated by 30-year-old Duntrell Thomas left a 41-year-old woman in the hospital with serious injuries. Police say they arrested Duntrell that same day. He was charged with second-degree assault. Jakara Canty is the daughter of Cheray Jenkins, who Canty says was “unrecognizable” after the alleged attack. “I'm hurt and I'm mad that anybody could do this to a human being," she told News 12. “I broke down and cried. I couldn’t believe it…like it wasn’t her." Canty says her mother and Duntrell dated for about four months. She says he ewas violent toward her mother during that time. “This is ongoing domestic violence,” said Canty. She called her mother a loving person that would “give you her last few dollars, even if she was struggling.” She has a message for those experiencing domestic violence: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Y'all see the signs, get out of there. Nobody deserves that," said Canty. Police say Duntrell was already arraigned on the assault charge. Court documents show Duntrell pleaded not guilty and bail was set at $500,000 cash. News 12 asked the Suffolk district attorney if he was released and is awaiting a response.
