A Commack couple divided by illness and injury were reunited Tuesday for what may be the last time.

Salvatore Giammusso, 91, is battling late-stage ALS and has one wish - to see his wife of almost 70 years, Katherine.

Last month, Katherine was hit by a car and is currently in a rehabilitation center recovering.

The couple’s son Darin says the separation has been hard on both of them.

"My dad has been very upset since the accident happened and especially since he can't do anything,” said Giammusso. “He can't help her in any way. This will be really good for him to be able to see her in person."

As Sal’s wife of almost 70 years recovers, he was placed in hospice care and his family says he doesn't have much time left.

Thanks to the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps, his wish came true Tuesday. Joseph Cassano, with the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps, says this is just part of their mission.

"We're trying to reunite them and give them one last time together to spend some time together before he does pass," he said. "Something like this being able to reunite family in a really difficult time. We like to give back as much as we can outside of the 911 calls."

Sal and Katherine's children say they're just grateful their parents get to hold each other's hands one last time.

"It was a nice idea to be able to bring them together and the fact that Commack ambulance volunteered to do this is absolutely fantastic,” said Giammusso.

Their family says the couple first met at Coney Island and then got married in 1956.
