The Smithtown School District and the parents of a former student have reached an undisclosed financial settlement in a federal case for alleged discrimination.
The parents filed a lawsuit in 2024 claiming the district did nothing to protect their child from severe bullying about his sexual identity.
It stated that Michael Coppola’s classmates physically abused and threatened to kill him from fourth to eighth grade at Great Hollow Middle School.
