It's Monday, which means we're highlighting another local neighborhood this morning. Our main street Long Island series continues in Hicksville. And our Jen Selig is at San Ando Deli grabbing a bite to eat at this early hour. Hey Jen. Hey, a rich. Yeah, it smells so good in here. They have breakfast food, they have dinner, lunch, a little bit of everything. They're open from 5 to 10 at night, five in the morning. There's just some of the options here. We got chicken and banana fried tacos and I learned that their fan favorite is called a pusa. It is pulled pork cheese and refried beans. And with me, I have Charlie, you're with the Chamber of Commerce. You are the president. You've been president for three years. So, you know, all the good businesses in town, businesses are wonderful in, in Hicksville when it's very much thriving throughout the community. What's your favorite part about this community? The people are really nice and it's a lot of fun to be here. We are interactive with all the different organizations in town and we're able to interact with the town. It's, you know, town government and we get things done around here. I know this deli has been around for six years but you have businesses that have been around for decades here. Well, I've been in Hicksville for 46 years and it's interesting to see like this deli at night is rocking. Uh, you see it with their bakery items behind me. Uh, their items. There are people here all, uh, it looks like all night long and, uh, it's packed and, uh, breakfast time. You know, they serve a purpose for the community, for those people who are, uh, doing those jobs, the landscapers, the other, they, they come in, they get their food, they're speaking their language. You know. Hickville has become a very diverse community. It has and I love that people can come in early. We already have a crowd, turn the camera around here and we got so many other businesses to check out. So of course, check back in with us in a little bit because we're going around town today. It is Monday, which means we're highlighting another local neighborhood and its small businesses. And this morning, our main street Long Island series continues in Hicksville Js is out at the house of donuts grabbing a sweet treat. And I think I heard you say that it was one of the best donuts you've ever had. That is quite a statement. I stand by that and it was so good and I bet all their flavors are really good. Really love the theme here, the pink, the donuts, the coffee, they got a little bit of everything. And I think I know why it's so good. It's because the owner has been making donuts since he was 17 years old. And let's introduce you to him. This is Nick. Nick is actually making donuts right now and you make one hand. There's no like machine process right here. Everything by hand. You're right. And your family started this business back in the early seventies. Yes, back in 1971. And you've been making donuts 1977 then I'm still here making donuts every single day. And I know you got regular customers because everything is made here in house, everything just smells and I know it tastes so good too. You're right. Yes. So can we see how you do this process here? So, we're, what, what's this part right now? Butter milk. It's a buttermilk flavor. So, can you tell us the secret on why these doughnuts are so good too? You know, do feel good. Whatever you do. You have to me, you know, I like to mcdonald's. So that's why I've been doing this for years. I think we have to bring some back to the station too. Um, so hopefully we'll make some more. It's Monday, which means we're highlighting another local neighborhood this morning. Our main street Long Island series continues in Hicksville. And our jig is at automat, learning about the upgrades that you can make to your car. You really get around town today, Jen. Yeah, you can customize these cars. They've been working this whole time. It's ok. We're live right now. You guys customize cars, you restore cars, these beautiful cars behind you and you mainly focus on the classic cars. Yes, we do. In fact, my father started the company in 1956. That's a picture of him at his 90th birthday. He began with one cutting table, one sewing machine in a basement in Hicksville. So for 68 years, we have been in Hicksville, serving, not just the Hicksville community, all of Long Island the entire northeast and believe it or not, we are an international company. We have accounts all over the world because there are classic cars everywhere in this world and we ship product out for people to restore classic cars wherever they are. And this is Tim, by the way, I didn't introduce you before. You are the owner and you've always had a passion for cars. I mean, this has been in our blood. We have had customers come in with a vision of what they wanna do and then we take that vision and we turn it into reality and there are so many different interesting stories behind all these cars. Um, there are very generational type things, very sentimental things. Some of these cars that we work on, it's the guy's father's car, it's the guy's grandmother's car. I have a 67 Camaro over here. The girl was working on it with her father. He passed and she's continuing the restoration. So not all these, not all these customers are guys. We have girls who are motor heads also and you really get to know your customers and everything and you said you've had customers throughout Long Island. So we're gonna stick around here and learn more about your business and send it back to you guys in the studio. Ok, Jen. Thanks so much. We'll check back in a little.

Our Gen Selig is at Francesco's Bakery. Grabbing a sweet treat. Hey, Jen. Hey, and I got some on this plate right here. Pioli's Macaroon. I think that's a lady finger. Right? Ok, cool. These are really good and tasty. And with me, I have Charlie the chamber president again. You know, this business inside out. You're a regular customer here. I come here all the time. I get my birthday cakes from here. I get my just general cakes. I have people, my relatives who turn around and say, uh, when you're going for Christmas ship cookies to Florida and my nieces and nephews in Florida get five pounds of cookies shipped from here every year. And it's cool because they make all their products in the back and they ship out nationwide. Yes, they do. And, uh, the, the pro and they also service a lot of the catering halls. They do all the wedding cakes and the owner actually appeared on the Food Network. Uh, he was one of the contestants one time he was also on, um, uh, Seinfeld Coffees, uh, comedians with cars ta having coffee. Uh, so it's a famous old spot, uh, overall and the place suffered a devastating fire a few years back and came back bigger, better and stronger than they ever were. And we see it right here. This place is absolutely gorgeous. And if you haven't been here to eat any of this stuff, you've got to come and check it out, we're going to send it back to you guys in the studio.

You know what Mondays mean? We are focusing on one of Long Island's many great main streets and that includes Hicksville. And that's where we find News Twelve's Gen Selig. Today, there are a bunch of different places on the island that sell those chunky delicious cookies. But here they solely focus on thin cookies. Hence the name of the business. And with me, I have so how you are the owner of the business and this is your recipe, right? And it was made right in your kitchen. Yes, it definitely was. It was sparked by just staying home for COVID and we came up with this recipe and we fell in love with it and now you opened up your own business and you guys are fairly new here on the block. Yeah, it hasn't really been a year. We opened up in November of last year. So, um yeah, almost a year. Do you have regular customers already? Yes, we definitely do. We have customers that used to come to my house and now they come here. So it's like full circle. You said you grew up in Hicksville too? Yeah, I did. I grew up um, not too far from here, like 10 minutes from here, went to school here, like high school here and then still here. So the fact the fact that you have a business right in the neighborhood you grew up in, I mean, that's so special. Yeah, it definitely is special. It's nice to see, you know, the community coming together and just coming here and it's where I grew up. It's really nice. Yeah. To provide it for the community. I wish you guys could smell through the camera because it smells so good. What type of cookies we have here before we go, we're going to put them in the oven, right? We're gonna put these in the oven. We have our chocolate chip, our snickerdoodle double chocolate and then we have our seasonal flavors which are pumpkin spice peanut butter, crunch orange creamsicle apple pie just for this month because we have new flavors every month. Sounds so good. I guess I got to bring some back to the station and for now send it back to you guys in the studio.
