If you've ever dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights or soaking in Iceland's famed Blue Lagoon, you're in luck.
Starting soon, travelers can fly from Long Island's Islip MacArthur Airport to Iceland, thanks to a new partnership between Southwest Airlines and Icelandair.
The innovative collaboration means that passengers can book a single itinerary that combines flights on both airlines. You'll take a Southwest Airlines flight from MacArthur Airport to Baltimore, then catch an Icelandair flight from Baltimore to Reykjavik, Iceland. In a convenient feature, passengers' bags will be transferred automatically to the connecting flight.
"I have friends who went to Iceland and loved it. I would definitely consider going," said Dorothy Gay, of Patchogue, expressing excitement about the new route.
The airport is equally enthusiastic about the new offering.
"We’re excited to have the connectivity between Icelandair and Southwest as our partner. People should book their flights as soon as possible because I hear June is the best month to travel to Iceland," says Shelley LaRose Arken, MacArthur Airport's commissioner of aviation.
Currently, travelers must make their bookings on the Icelandair website, but that will change next year when Southwest begins accepting reservations for these flights.
"I think it’s great. It would definitely be an opportunity to go somewhere and have it close by," said Gay. "It would be wonderful."
For those eager to plan a trip, bookings are already available, with the first flight—via Baltimore—departing this Saturday.
