Suffolk police say a pit bull attack left a 9-year-old girl in Bay Shore with serious injuries.
Pat Schlauch, the girl's father, says the neighbor’s dog bit Daniella’s face in their driveway as she was getting into their car Saturday morning and would not let go.
“I didn’t have time to think, but I knew I had to save my daughter’s life," he says. “The dog just jumped right on her. I was coming out of the house. I just jumped right on his back and held his head down so he couldn’t shake.”
Schlauch says the owner came over and was able to call the dog off. Daniella was rushed to the hospital.
The family says they want the dog taken away. The Town of Islip says the owners have been told to confine it for 10 days.
Daniella was home when News 12 spoke to the family. Her injuries looked too graphic to show. She has to go back to the plastic surgeon in three weeks. Her family worries she will have physical and emotional scars.
“He could’ve killed her. He just missed her eye. Her eyebrow is cut in half. Nine staples in her head. The doctor didn’t even know how many stitches he put in," her father said.
Schlauch says Daniella was afraid to come home and the family is scared to go outside, as they say the dog owners do not have a fence around their property.
Neighbors with kids on Lombardy Boulevard, where the attack happened, say they're concerned.
"If you know you have these types of pets, you have to at least try to do what you can to keep everybody's safety first priority," said Antonio Cumberbatch, a neighbor on the block.
The Town of Islip says their animal control officers issued the owners a summons for not having a license for the dog.
Suffolk police say they are investigating the incident.
