Elmont residents gathered together Thursday to celebrate those who served the country with a parade and the opportunity to get vaccinated.
Veterans Day serves as a day to honor members of the community who risked their lives for our freedom, but it also a day to acknowledge the difficulties many face with health care and finding homes.
A pop-up vaccine site was at the Elmont ceremony for all those who were looking to receive a flu or COVID-19 vaccine.
New York Project Hope was also at the event to help veterans affected by COVID-19 that need information on counseling or housing.
"They have been struggling a lot like the rest of us," says Mikelina Nunez, of New York Project Hope. "In housing, in information about the vaccine, a lot of people have questions because there is a lot of misinformation going around."
Veteran unemployment rates fluctuate month to month. Even if the unemployment rate for veterans drops, the National Veterans Foundation says the total figure is likely much higher than recorded.
Veterans who need information on housing or other help can visit the New York Hope website.
