An aide hired to care for a 97-year-old Valley Stream woman admitted to hurting her.
Vera Simpson pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge and was sentenced to 25 days behind bars and five years of probation for hurting Florence Cuccias.
Cuccias died two days after her family says Simpson was captured on camera putting her hand over her mouth.
They family says she was captured on video prior to this handling the great-grandmother roughly and appearing to yell at her.
James Cuccias said his mom “had so much more to live.”
A spokesperson for Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said:
“NCDA thoroughly investigated and prosecuted this tragic case of elder abuse and secured a top-count violent felony assault plea from the defendant. Our office takes these matters very seriously, and are committed to protecting our most vulnerable residents from violence at the hands of caretakers. Our thoughts remain with Florence Cuccias’ family as they continue to mourn the loss of a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.”
Simpson told the judge in a statement that she let her emotions get the best of her and “acted in a way that I am so ashamed about.”
